5 Steps to Fix a Sticking uPVC Door (Easy Guide for the Essex Heat)

If you live in Essex, you know exactly what happens when the summer sun hits. Whether you’re in Billericay, Brentwood, or down towards Southend-on-Sea, the rising temperatures do more than just make the garden look nice: they can wreak havoc on your home security. Specifically, your uPVC doors.

I get calls every single week during the summer months from frustrated homeowners in SS0 to SS15 and CM11 to CM15 who are suddenly struggling to lock their front doors. The handle feels stiff, the key won’t turn quite right, or the door seems to be "sticking" against the frame.

The good news? It’s usually not a broken lock. It’s thermal expansion. uPVC is a fantastic, durable material, but it expands in the heat. When that frame grows by just a few millimetres, your precision-engineered locking points stop lining up with the frame.

As a Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) approved expert and Nigel Rose Award winner, my philosophy is always repairs over replacements. Before you think about buying a whole new door or a costly new multi-point lock, follow these five steps to get your door moving smoothly again.


Step 1: The "Cool Down" Quick Fix

It sounds too simple to be true, but often the first thing you should do is help the material contract. If your door is south-facing and has been baking in the sun all afternoon, it has likely expanded.

What to do:
Take a damp, cool cloth and wipe down the outside of the door and the frame. In extreme cases, a very light spray with a garden hose (avoiding the lock cylinder) can provide immediate relief. As the uPVC cools, it will naturally shrink back to its original size.

If the door suddenly starts working again after a few minutes of cooling, you’ve confirmed the issue is definitely heat expansion. This is a common occurrence across Chelmsford and Basildon during heatwaves.

Step 2: The Open vs. Closed Diagnostic Test

Before you reach for the screwdriver, you need to know exactly where the problem lies. I always tell my customers to perform this simple test.

The Test:

  1. Open the door fully.
  2. Lift the handle and turn the key.
  3. If the handle lifts smoothly and the key turns easily while the door is open, your lock mechanism is perfectly fine. The issue is alignment.
  4. If the handle is still "crunchy," stiff, or the key won’t turn even when the door is open, you likely have a failing gearbox or a blocked mechanism.

If it's an alignment issue caused by the heat, move on to Step 3. If it’s the lock itself, you should stop here and call a professional. Step 3: Identify the Strike Point

To fix the stick, you need to know where the door is rubbing. Close the door slowly and look for gaps: or a lack of them.

Look for:

  • Scuff marks: Check the metal keeps (the plates on the frame where the bolts go). Fresh scratches often indicate where the locking hooks are hitting the metal instead of sliding into the hole.
  • The "Drop": uPVC doors are heavy. Over time, and accelerated by heat, they can "drop" on their hinges. If the top corner of the door is further away from the frame than the bottom corner, your hinges need adjusting.

Identifying these points is crucial before making any tweaks. If you’re in Wickford or Rayleigh and can’t quite see where it’s catching, give the frame a quick wipe with a slightly soapy cloth; the "clean" spots left behind after a few tries will show you exactly where the friction is happening.

Step 4: Adjust the Hinges (The Technical Part)

Most modern uPVC doors have adjustable hinges, usually "flag hinges." These allow you to move the door in three directions: up/down, left/right, and in/out (compression).

How to adjust a Flag Hinge:

  1. Remove the plastic cover on the side of the hinge.
  2. You will see an Allen key screw.
  3. To move the door towards or away from the hinge side: Turn the screw on the side of the hinge. A small quarter-turn is usually all it takes.
  4. To move the door up or down: There is usually a screw at the very bottom or top of the hinge.

Pro Tip: Always make small adjustments. Turn the screw a quarter-turn, then test the door. It’s easy to over-adjust and make the problem worse. If you’re not comfortable doing this, it’s always safer to call an MLA-approved locksmith who can ensure the door remains balanced and secure.

Step 5: Lubricate (But Use the Right Stuff!)

Once the door is aligned, you want to ensure the moving parts can handle the friction of a hot day. However, using the wrong lubricant can actually damage your lock over time.

The Golden Rule of Lubrication:
NEVER use WD-40 inside the lock cylinder. While it works initially, it eventually dries out and becomes "tacky," attracting dust and grit that will eventually jam the pins.

What to use instead:

  • PTFE or Silicone-based spray: Use this on the "strip" (the long metal part on the side of the door), the hooks, and the deadbolts.
  • Graphite powder: This is the best choice for the actual keyhole/cylinder.

Why You Should Never Force the Handle

If there is one thing I want you to take away from this guide, it’s this: Do not force it.

When a uPVC door expands and the locks don't line up, homeowners often try to "shoulder" the door shut or pull the handle up with extreme force. The internal components of a multi-point lock (the gearbox) are often made of cast metal. If you force them while they are misaligned, they can snap.

Once that internal gearbox snaps, the door is often stuck in the locked position, requiring a professional emergency lockout service. It’s far cheaper and easier to spend 10 minutes adjusting a hinge than it is to replace a full multi-point locking system.

While many sticking doors can be solved with the steps above, some situations require professional intervention. You should call me if:

  • The handle feels "mushy" or has no resistance at all.
  • The door has dropped so significantly that it's scraping the floor.
